Fabulous all round! ❤️❤️ We stayed at Burnside for one night before our ferry across to Orkney and it was fabulous all round. Kacey was a superb hostess and was both attentive and unobtrusive. We had booked the Grey Suite which was excellent. Very clean and everything we needed. We liked having a comfy sofa to relax and also a table to eat our evening meal and breakfast. After a very long journey, we really appreciated an evening meal on the premises. Our meal was delicious and there was every attention to detail. We slept very well and in the morning enjoyed a fantastic breakfast. Our ferry was cancelled just before breakfast and Kacey was hugely attentive in trying to get us some more information and advising us on options. We particularly appreciated the friendly contact via WhatsApp which worked really well. Overall this is a fantastic place to stay - we have stayed very close by in a high profile BnB attached to the nearby castle and we far preferred Burnside - high quality and unpretentious! Thank you and we would love to return! ❤️

The stay was only second to the scenery! We throughly enjoyed our visit to Burnside Cottage and hope to come back and stay (very soon). Kacey is a gem! She provided a catered must-see list, that did not disappoint. Our single regret is we didn’t have enough time. Breakfast was terrific and delicious. There were many options available and she catered to many lifestyle choices (if not every). Also, Kacey was a hero and somehow found it possible to clean our week’s worth of laundry in a day - a daunting task to be sure. Thank you Kacey - you run a top-notch B&B!

Ideal BB The Burnside Cottage is conveniently situated for the ferry journey from Gills Bay to Orkney. Kacey was extremely hospitable and the room is very clean, cozy, and tastefully decorated. The breakfast served in the room is very delicious.

NC500 stay. I can not recommend Burnside cottage enough! From start to finish I was amazing. We stayed for one night, the room was massive with a large on suite, and separate bedroom with bunk beds. They are dog friendly, infact there was fresh water bowl for our dog. Bed was very comfortable. Great views Breakfast came on a trolly in the morning The food was the best we have had in a small B&B, Perfect there was nothing to moan about, even had bacon treats for the dog! If doing NC500 book to stay here, such a great find. Dog friendly Would stay here most definitely again.

Best location for the Orkney Car Ferry We spent two nights at the Burnside cottage. The location is literally 4 minutes from the Orkney Car Ferry which gives you enough time to enjoy breakfast in your room and still make it before 8am. The rooms were very comfortable and clean and the quality of breakfast was outstanding. Thurso and Wick are short drives away. It's also a great spot to do some star gazing if the sky is clear.

Outstanding. The Raven room at Burnside Cottage B&B was superb. Host Kacey was friendly, helpful and not at all intrusive. She is also a talented cook. Pre-arrival comms were easy and helpful via Whatsapp. The room is furnished and finished to an abnormally high standard. The attention to detail was remarkable: blackout curtains, places to put things, power sockets, mini fridge, towels, pillows, comfortable chairs- anything you can think of is easily to hand and of high quality. Very comfortable beds. Everything done with care and taste- a traveler’s rest done by someone who knows what travelers want. Sparkling clean. And the food. The breakfast was outstanding, generous, cooked to perfection and practically anything you can think of available. Just delicious. We also ordered the evening meal. This came, hot, at a standard any fine dining restaurant would be proud to offer. Really fabulous meals. I don’t know how we will cope with standard UK hotel food after this…. We can think of nothing negative. The whole experience was outstanding. 10 out of ten.

Stylish Bed & Breakfast + Self Catering Studio in Caithness

Kacey and Stephen would like to offer you a warm inclusive welcome to Burnside Cottage Bed & Breakfast + The Pig Shed Self Catering Studio.

Burnside Cottage is an eco-friendly stylish bed and breakfast situated in Caithness in the far north of Scotland. We are proud to have received the Gold Award from Green Tourism.  Located just between Dunnet Head and John O’Groats, and 800m off the North Coast 500 route (NC500). It is also an ideal stop for those travelling to Orkney being just a couple of minutes from the Gills Bay ferry (Pentland Ferries).

The property, developed from a former croft house, offers two spacious ground floor suites. Also available from Spring 2022 is a new self-catering studio flat ‘The Pig Shed’. Decorated in an individual style, with Stephen’s carving & photography throughout, it is warm and cosy even on stormy winter Caithness days!

Extensive building and redecoration work has been completed in 20/21 to enable guests to be more self-contained.

There is now a guest entrance for the two suites, which contain comfortable seating & dining areas. We also offer an optional evening menu (Meat, Fish & Vegan) & all meals are served via room service.

The Pig Shed is a Self Catering Studio for two. It is fully self contained and attached to the guest wing of Burnside Cottage.

The property looks out over open countryside and the isle of Stroma with the Orkney Islands in the distance.

Burnside Cottage & The Pig Shed benefit from ample parking & free Wi-Fi.

We welcome dogs but we do charge a £15 supplement which we donate to dog rescues (we support 2 – Balkan Underdogs & Dawgdogs.net)

We also have a garage and drying room for motorbikes and cycles along with storage for sports equipment.

Burnside Cottage is an Inclusive business.

As from February 2024, we have a drinks licence and are delighted to offer a range of local spirits and beers plus wines to our guests.

Photographs and Woodcarvings

Stephen (a.k.a. Mr Burnside) is a Photographer & Woodcarver who takes great inspiration from the nature, wildlife & scenery surrounding him in Caithness.

Visitors to Burnside Cottage are generally on their way to somewhere else, often the West Coast or Orkney, but are rarely aware of the wonders of Caithness itself.

Kacey & Stephen are passionate about where they now live. Burnside Cottage therefore is decorated throughout with examples of Stephen’s work which showcase the beauty of the local area.

From the guest entrance gallery of his photographs (there are others in both suites) to The Grey Suite’s bespoke carved wall panels which so many of our guests love…..if you would like to view more of his creations take a look at the Mr Burnside website.

Location

Burnside Cottage is located just off the NC500 in Gills, Canisbay, a scattered former crofting and fishing township on the far north east coast of Scotland. Gills bay overlooks Stroma and the Orkney islands.

John O’Groats is close to the east & the Castle of Mey is 4 miles to the west. We are situated approximately half way between Wick & Thurso & are conveniently located for those travelling to the Orkneys as the Pentland Ferry harbour is around ½ a mile. The nearest airport is 17 miles away in Wick.

Big skies, rugged cliffs, spectacular sea-stacks, mysterious moors, long summer nights……these are just some of the natural features that give Caithness its special appeal. These are the lowlands beyond the Highlands, a county described by its most literary son, Neil Gunn, as “The land of exquisite lights”.
